What Is Faith?By Paul Hayden January 19, 2026What is going on in the world today? It seems like everything is NUTS! CRAZY! Out of control! Guess what? It isn't. Everything isn't out of control. Just go outside and smell the fresh air. Go outside tonight and look up at the stars. Take some deep breaths, and give thanks. Some parties are trying to convince us that everything is out of control and crazy. Just slow down and look carefully around you. “But God…” I appreciate that phrase in the Scriptures. “But God…” It indicates the divine breaking into our lives with something remarkable, especially for those who are looking for something special! I am working on a project right now that will stretch me in new ways in my life. It concerns faith. What is it to have faith? Why do we need to have faith? What is faith? I love doing deep-dive studies in the Scriptures, especially the New Testament. I first discovered this back over fifty (50!!!) years ago. It is an amazing collection of writings that have shaped and influenced my entire life. I do treasure what I have learned and experienced in my life of faith in Jesus and God. Am I a "perfect" example of someone with faith? I don't think so, maybe not even a “good” example. I hold the truth that I have come to know near and dear to my heart. As we have the opportunity to grow older, I think we can learn a lot about what is truly valuable in the sight of God, and what is important in life. We learn to value different things than when we were younger. That is certainly not to say that quite young people can't treasure the most important things of life. I just don't think that generally they have enough experience, they haven't suffered enough, they haven't worked hard or long enough, to really appreciate the nuances of what life really is, or what is really most valuable in the course of life. Anyway, I am doing some deep thinking about this topic of FAITH right now. Maybe, at least a little bit, it could be seen as some cramming for the big test that we will all will take sooner or later.
