Just Who Do YOU Think You Are?

August 18, 2025

Just who do YOU think you are?

Be honest, but not overdone in your "honesty."

My namesake Paul, Saul of Tarsus, St. Paul, who wrote much of the New Testament, had done atrocious things in persecution of people who believed in Jesus, thinking he was doing the right thing, what even God wanted him to do. But he found out quite abruptly that he was indeed wrong, when the risen Jesus came to him in a vision and turned his life around. He began his life as part of the family of God whom he had been persecuting. He was helped to see, through the grace of God, that Jesus was the way, the truth, and the life, as He had said in His discourse with His followers.

Later in his life, Paul wrote to the church, Jesus' followers in Rome, these words contained in his letter to the Romans (Chapter 12, verse 3):

"For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith."

Included in this directive, I believe, is the imperative to also think as highly of yourself as you should, not to think too little of yourself, having "sound judgment" in your measure of faith, which is hopefully always growing.

Jesus said that when He went to be with God the Father, after His resurrection, that He would send the Holy Spirit, and "when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come." John 16.3

Beware of becoming lazy and "stupid" in your life. There are many pitfalls that can grab hold of us and draw us in. Use what God has given you, for yourself, your family, your friends, and the world. Help others whenever you can.

Be thankful! Give thanks to God! Be kind to others! Be learning to trust God!

He is a student of the Bible, and is avidly interested in our role in the context of history, as understood through the heart and eyes of faith. Paul has lived and traveled somewhat widely, and now lives in the heartland of the U.S. (central Illinois), with his wife Donna - they have five grown children. Since December of 2016, he serves as the Editor-in-Chief of www.ConservativeTruth.org.

"I was raised by a Christian minister, Kenneth Hayden, until his death when I was 10. Then my mom Bonnalee Hunt Hayden married a farmer. So I was raised in a very down-to-earth home. My faith has grown through the years, but both in conjunction with the institutional church and through small groups and individuals, including books as well as group settings, where deep, sincere faith is shared that aligns with Biblical truth."
