Memorial Day - Our Real National DebtBy Bob McCray May 26, 2025![]()
Day after day we hear about politicians pointing fingers at each other over the cost of our national debt. Whenever we hear the word debt, the first thing that comes to mind is money and how much the government owes. But also, we have a debt that is far more important, and that is the debt we can never repay. A debt we owe to all of those who have fallen in the service of our country. They gave away their lives and their future, fighting to preserve our way of life and our country. Every year, on Monday of the last week in the month of May, is Memorial Day - a day that is set aside to remember our military war dead. April 19 of 2025 marked the 250th year since the Patriot Minute Men of Lexington and Concord faced off with the British Army, in the opening skirmish of the American Revolutionary War. It also marks the day the first American soldiers fell in the defense of what became the United States of America. This 4th of July is the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which was declared to King George of Great Britain. We were no longer his subjects, and we are a free and sovereign nation. For way too many people, Memorial Day is considered the opening day of summer vacation - signaling the frantic migration of millions of Americans heading for the mall, theme parks, and the beach. I fully understand families getting together and wanting to have fun. Please take a little time and remember those who died so that we can live and enjoy our great country.
