How's Your Heart?By Paul Hayden March 17, 2025Well, my heart has some issues! Aside from the predicament that all of us humans find ourselves in. That is, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” (Romans 3.23) I will be having a heart surgery procedure on Monday, March 17, an ablation to help correct the A-Fib condition I have had for the past year. Thankfully, it is not “open heart,” but still… The doctor will go up into my heart through a vein and sort of deaden little areas of the heart so it will fire correctly. It is a very delicately balanced, carefully grown, electro-chemical set of tissues that needs to be firing right. Right now I experience some “misfiring” which pushes my heart rate up higher than it should be, and which leaves me short of breath. The irregularity also creates the possibility of having fluctuation in blood flow, which can, and did, lead to blood clots in the heart. That got corrected, so the procedure is all go ahead! But back to our human condition. The heart is at the very center of it all - our human condition. The Bible speaks of having hard hearts, an unforgiving heart, a broken heart, a sad heart, and a joyful heart, full of gladness. It is not too difficult to figure out what you want going on with your own heart, as you read and consider the various verses of Scripture that talk about the heart. After all, it is at the very heart of the matter. Facing possibilities of having your own heart worked on, or possibly failing someday, as all of our physical hearts certainly will, brings a depth of reality to your senses that we usually take entirely for granted. What can we do about it? Do a “word study” sometime on the subject “heart” in the Scriptures. It can be fascinating, with any key word that you want to understand. Such as “love,” or “spirit." What kind of heart do you want? “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise." Psalm 51.17 I am praying for the doctor's hand (and machines) to be safe and sure, as for those assisting him. But moreover, I submit my heart to God who loves us, and made us for a reason, and has a purpose for our lives. I don't think He is done with me yet here in this life. But that, too, is to be found in the prayer Jesus taught us to pray, “…Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done…” Blessings to all of you, until next week…or the next step in life…

My faith has grown through the years, but both in conjunction with the institutional church and through small groups and individuals, including books as well as group settings, where deep, sincere faith is shared that aligns with Biblical truth."
