Trump says No Wall - No DREAMersBy Brent Smith January 8, 2018 “Donald Trump demanded on Friday that any deal to resolve the fate of young undocumented migrants [DREAMers] must be paired with funding for a wall along the southern US border,” reports The Guardian.
How rude. Doesn’t Trump know that only liberals are permitted to “demand” things? The rest of us are to either shut up or ask politely, then accept whatever Chuck Schumer decides.
This opening statement by the Guardian follows a rather sad photo of a mother and her melancholy child. Although the photo’s caption doesn’t name the two as illegal, this is the obvious inference, as both look Hispanic and are seated in front of sign that reads, “Don’t Separate Families.”
“There are about 700,000 so-called Dreamers [sic], undocumented migrants brought to the US as children. In September, Trump announced that he was rescinding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or Daca, a policy implemented by Barack Obama in 2012 that allowed Dreamers to come out of the shadows to study and work legally in the US. Trump placed the fate of the young immigrants squarely in the hands of Congress, giving lawmakers until 5 March to find a legislative solution.”
Well – where to begin with this load of crap, written in a way to sound like factual, objective reporting. And to anyone unfamiliar, this does sound like legitimate, dispassionate reporting. Unfortunately for us – most will read this as real news.
First: “Trump placed the fate of the young immigrants squarely in the hands of Congress.” According to our Constitution, those are the only hands legally charged with doing so. Article I, Section 8, clause 4, states that, “Congress shall [not may] have the Power To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization…” And therefore, by logical and legal extension, also establish rules for immigration and immigrants. The President has no authority in this matter. Obama had no authority to do what he did. If Congress chose not to act, then too bad for Obama. If they choose not to this time around, that’s tough luck for Trump.
And second: We hear ad nauseum that the DREAMers were dragged by their parents to this country through no fault of their own. They are victims of circumstance and must be treated as such. This is also fake news that most, even on our side, gloss over as if to be fact.
Well, it isn’t fact. Not entirely – not by a stretch. Many of the estimated 700,000 DREAMers were not brought in by anyone, which is why we have the term “unaccompanied minors.”
In April of 2016, the Washington Free Beacon posted an enlightening article highlighting the increase in unaccompanied minor crossings.
“The number of unaccompanied alien children (UACs) illegally crossing the U.S. border ‘has increased sharply’ since 2011, with a surge of more than 1,200 percent just between 2011 and 2014, according to the Congressional Research Service. The agency also disclosed that the flow has increased significantly in the first five months of fiscal 2016.”
These “children,” a vast number who are barely children, came on their own. Their parents weren’t standing on the Mexico side of the border tossing them into America. But this is the mental picture the left wishes to paint – of disheveled mothers and their desperate infants.
Every year, border patrol agents capture a fraction of the illegals that cross into our country. Most still get through. Yet, “The illegal immigration of these [unaccompanied] children hit record-breaking numbers in 2014, with U.S. officials apprehending more than 52,000 alien children,” write the Beacon. So if 52,000 were apprehended, how many do you think weren’t?
Now, regarding the pitiful amount of money Trump is asking for. Here are a couple more agonizing facts.
In February, 2016, the State Department awarded $20 million in assistance to strengthen Mexico’s southern border. Yes – Mexico’s Southern border. Not ours – Mexico’s.
And, “U.S. assistance to Central America [to stem the flow of immigration into the U.S.] will likely total $748 million in fiscal 2016 and is expected to total more than $771 in fiscal 2017, according to government projections.”
So over $2 billion has been given to other countries, including $20 million to shore up Mexico’s Southern border, to help with illegal immigration, but Congress won’t give Trump $1.6 billion to get started on our own Southern border. This, Schumer says, is a non-starter.
