The New America - Booming Economy, Sinking Morality, Dreams of Impeachment

February 3, 2020

Observing the ebb and flow of the nation’s politics leaves us staggering and confused.

Some of us are impeaching a highly successful president at the same time some are thinking to elect a candidate who has suspended all moral answerability and decided that it is OK for men to hitch up with men, in spite of every moral and traditional warning against it.

This is moral and spiritual blindness that can only be described as reprobation.

The unbridled surge to bring in inclusiveness has surpassed the speed of common sense, the Bible records, health dangers, and long-held traditional values that have existed for millennia.

We have gotten totaled in the effort to get tolerant, whacked in the effort to seem wise, and trashed in the effort to follow trends.

How long can a nation slide into moral reprobation while climbing to the heights of economic success?

The answer is quite obvious – not long!

Let’s see.

We have but to ask two pertinent questions, to get to the heart of the matter.

1. Where does wealth come from?

“But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.” (Dt 8: 18)

2. Where does success come from?

“Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers: And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee.” (Dt 7: 12-13)

It is here, that we can say with no uncertainty that while President Trump has done remarkably well with things like USMCA, job creation, and new tariffs, those actions pale in comparison to his appearance in the recent March for Life gathering in Washington DC and his work to defend freedom of religion in our country.

It is the call for renewal, repentance, and righteousness that outweighs simple economic gains. In fact, when we understand the above passages it becomes clear that economic blessings are predicated on moral standing.

It is hard for most people to connect obedience to the gospel and blessings from God on any level, personal or collective. Today, even the church is dragging its heels about obeying God. Little wonder that Peter had to warn the believers.

“For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?” (1Pet 4: 17-18)

Every true messenger of the gospel would remind us that nations rise and fall at the discretion of the Almighty. Blessed nations have decided that they care deeply about whether God is pleased with their collective behaviors.

But there are countless examples in scripture where immediate obedience resulted in immediate blessings.

One such example is when Jesus asked Peter to use his fishing boat as a platform and pulpit from which to teach the crowds on the shore. When he was done Jesus told him to cast his nets out. Which resulted in a huge catch of fish. (Lk 5: 1-11)

In 2005, three-time Southern Baptist Convention President and Pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis Tennessee Adrian Rogers died. But in 2016 a video of Rogers was posted of his sermon entitled “Will God Impeach America?” – he may as well have preached this great message yesterday. See for yourself.

Keep in mind that in the heated debate about impeaching President Trump we may all be missing the point entirely. It is we the people that should fear impeachment.
