God Can Use Trump: Stranger Things Have Happened!

October 17, 2016

Evangelical Christians and principled Conservatives are wrestling with their consciences as they contemplate the position that political circumstances have put them in–Trump or Clinton. It is not a choice between good and evil but between bad and badder.

They can’t vote for Hillary because of her far left positions that would destroy America; and they find the pseudo conservative Republican Donald Trump rather repulsive. I just finished reading the book of Judges which might throw some light on this quandary.

God has never limited Himself to only using the godly to bring His people from their backslidden ways. He used wicked, pagan kings such as Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar, Cyrus, etc., to accomplish what He wanted with the Jewish people.

Israel was supposed to be faithful to God, keep His commandments, offer the regular sacrifices, and generally obey the Pentateuch. However, it was a day when “every man did that which was right in his own eyes” somewhat like today. God was angry with Israel because they “served Baal and Ashtaroth” and He “delivered them into the hands of spoilers” seeking to bring them back to the place of obedience. Then, God “raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.” So, before Israel had a king, they were ruled by judges under the guidance of the prophet Samuel. One judge was Samson, not exactly a Sabbath school teacher, but a willful, sexually active strongman with a smart mouth. He was a big man known especially for his hair!

Samson was known for his physical strength but not for his spiritual strength or wisdom. He is repeatedly seen with the wrong women. Delilah, the last one, destroyed him. Samson killed many of the enemy during his life and in his death killed 3,000 of their leaders at one time. Other Judges had major personal problems as well, but God used them for specific purposes.

In Numbers 22 God even used an ass to accomplish His purpose. After forty years wandering in the wilderness after leaving Egypt, Israel had finally reached the Promised Land having camped just east of the Jordan. They had recently defeated the Amorites and had conquered the land east of the Jordan except Edom and Moab. Balak, the king of Moab, was fearful that he would be crushed as were the Amorites and others who opposed Israel. Since the Moabites worshiped Baal, Balak decided to use demonism to keep him safe: he would hire a professional curser to defeat Israel.

Such a plan smacks of desperation and outrageous superstition but it was commonly done by the ancients. They believed that prophets and sorcerers had power to curse persons and places so as to confuse their schemes, frustrate their projects, debilitate their strength, and instill them with fear, causing them to flee in terror.

When ancient armies attacked a city, the general or emperor or priest would call for the city’s gods to leave the city and reside in the attackers’ city. Thereby the city was vulnerable for capture and destruction.

The Roman general used that tactic when they attacked Carthage removing the protection of Carthage’s gods to Rome thereby leaving the city unprotected. It seemed to work!

Virgil suggests that Troy was destroyed, only because the tutelary (protective or guardian) gods had forsaken it.
When Britain (and Druids) made their valiant stand against the Romans, Tacitus reports that the priestesses with “disheveled hair, white vestments, and torches in their hands, ran about like furies, devoting their enemies to destruction” and it seemed to mesmerize the Roman soldiers. For a few seconds the soldiers stood transfixed permitting the darts of the British to strike them dead.

So, we see in Numbers 22 that Balak, the King of Moab, hired Balaam, a Gentile who lived 400 miles away in Mesopotamia (Iraq) near the Euphrates River, to do the job of cursing Israel. Balak wanted the best and Balaam was the most famous “curser” available. Balaam was called a prophet in II Pet. 2:16 and many of the Jewish writers relate that Balaam had been a great prophet; however, God departed from him because of his covetousness. Balaam cursed places and people if the price was right. Any preacher, motivated by money, would be closely aligned with Balaam.

After much negotiation, Balaam agreed to Balak’s offer of fame and fortune, but it ended in failure. Balaam “saddled his ass” and started his journey to the west. His ass (to be propelled into eternal fame) had more sense than Balaam. Their journey took them through a “strait” and when an angel appeared on the trail, the ass veered to the side and jammed Balaam’s foot against the wall resulting in him striking the innocent animal.
The angel of the Lord stood between the narrow walls and the ass fell and Balaam “smote the ass with a staff.” It was Balaam who deserved the whipping not the innocent ass who was aware enough to see the angel that Balaam’s blind eyes did not see.

Then the Lord opened the mouth of the ass and she said to Balaam, “What have I done unto thee, that thou has smitten me these three times?” Balaam was not surprised to hear the ass speaking and told her that he would have killed her if he had a sword instead of a whip. It says much about Balaam’s state of mind that he would converse with an animal without shock or awe.

Balaam finally got the message and said, “I have sinned.” Balaam was mentally slower than the ass and is the only person who has been reprimanded by an ass.

If God can use wicked kings, false prophets, and an ass, I think God can use Donald Trump in order to accomplish His desires for our nation. Trumphas had many chances to make a fool of himself and he hasn’t missed a one. America is in real trouble and when you are in a battle with odds greatly against you even a blind butcher with St. Vitus' Dance  wielding a meat cleaver will be a reasonable temporary alliance.

Ass is a beast of burden similar to a horse but also an offensive term that deliberately insults somebody's intelligence identifying one who is a foolish, stubborn, and ridiculously pompous person. A Jewish proverb says, “If a man calls you an ass, think about it; if a second man calls you an ass, think very seriously about it; if a third man calls you an ass, purchase a saddle.”

I think it’s time for Donald Trump to purchase a saddle.
