Conservatives Battle Over Trump: Is He Conservative or Not? -Onan Coca

August 17, 2015

The Donald Trump frenzy reached a zenith this a few days ago when conservatives Ann Coulter, Charles Cooke and Sean Hannity slugged it out over whether or not Donald Trump was a conservative. We all know who Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity are, but let me tell you about Charles Cooke. Cooke is a writer for the standard in conservative journalism, the National Review, and he is a brilliant defender of all things conservative. He has just as much credibility among conservatives as Hannity does, and even more (with conservatives) than Coulter (who’s supported both Mitt Romney and Chris Christie in the past).

The three of them gathered on Sean Hannity’s show Thursday night to discuss whether or not Donald Trump was good for the GOP. It turned into so much more with Cooke openly flabbergasted that anyone truly believed Trump to be a conservative! (This is something I have wondered on the pages of Eagle Rising as well.) Watch the segment and then we’ll discuss it a bit more – plus get some reaction from Glenn Beck.

I know you know this… but I’ll say it again. I’m with Cooke on this. I understand that Trump is anti-establishment, but he is NO conservative. We have other candidates who are also anti-establishment (Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Rand Paul, Carly Fiorina) and they also happen to be conservatives – why aren’t they getting more support?

It’s not just me; over at his Facebook page, Glenn Beck had some similar questions:

He is part of the problem when he by his own admission, buys politicians; he said he identifies his "policies more as a democrat"; he makes President Obama look truly humble; he was very pro abortion until very recently; he still says "don't defund planned parenthood"; he is pro "assault weapon ban"; he is in favor of a wealth tax that would just "take money out of people's bank accounts"; he is for boots on the ground in Iraq and 'taking the oil' from the Iraqi people; he is a progressive 'republican'; he says single payer health care works; he said he would give people more than just Obama care; the First Lady would be the first to have posed nude in lesbian porno shots; he said that he keeps all the bibles he is given in a "special place" out side the city - and he only goes to church on Christmas and Easter; he is generally not a likable guy; he has around 16% favorability with Hispanics and he has gone bankrupt 4 times.

This is an honest question. I really want to understand:

Why are big name "conservatives" supporting him? I get it if you are tired of politicians, a republican progressive, or you are only about winning (although those who say they would NEVER vote for him is over 50% of REPUBLICANS). Perhaps you are angry and you just want to make someone pay or just want something done and you don't care how it gets done, but what PRINCIPLES does he have that they are attracted to?

I am not talking about the average Joe, I am talking about Sean Hannity or Ann Coulter. How about Savage or Rush?

I don’t get it either. The most telling part of this debate for me is how little evidence Coulter has for her position. Most of her arguments come down to “people change their minds” and “he just didn’t understand the issue.” I don’t know about you – but in my mind, it’s not a good thing when your candidate doesn’t understand the most important issues of the day. (Specifically the Planned Parenthood issue is what she was saying he didn’t understand.)

I just don’t get why so many of you who call Marco Rubio a RINO are perfectly happy with Donald Trump’s politics? The only thing that Rubio is “more liberal” on than Donald Trump is illegal immigration – just one issue. It just doesn’t make sense to me…

At least now I know that there are other conservatives out there who are just as confused about this as me.
